The Spanish Armada

August 15 @ 08:00 - August 16 @ 17:00

NHSA is delighted and honoured to welcome Professor Geoffrey Parker as our speaker for our study of the Spanish Armada campaign, perhaps the greatest challenge ever faced by Tudor England.  Professor Parker is the Andreas Dorpalen Professor of History at the Ohio State University, a Fellow of the British Academy, and a Corresponding Fellow of the Royal Society of Edinburgh. In 2012 the Royal Dutch Academy awarded him its biennial Heineken Foundation Prize for History, and two years later he won one of the three medals awarded by the British Academy for ‘a landmark academic achievement… which has transformed understanding of a particular subject’, for his book Global Crisis: war, climate change and catastrophe in the seventeenth century. His many distinguished works include The Military Revolution: Military Innovation and the Rise of the West, 1500–1800 and, in conjunction with the underwater archaeologist Colin Martin, Armada: The Spanish Enterprise and England’s Deliverance in 1588. He was also a consultant and main contributor on the BBC series Armada (1988) and Armada: 12 Days to Save England (2015). The talk will take place at 2 pm on Saturday 15 August 2026 and will be accompanied by an exhibition as usual. Please contact Philip Marshall on 07946 041733 if you would like to attend”.
