Mark is a graduate in Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering and has had a lifelong interest in maritime history. He has written extensively on naval conflicts\, with many works on warfare in the age of sail such as “American Heavy Frigates 1794–1826”\, “American Light and Medium Frigates 1794–1836”\, “Constitution vs Guerriere” and “Ships of the American Revolutionary Navy”. DESCRIPTION:The NHSA is delighted and honoured to welcome Andrew Lambert\, Laughton Professor of Naval History at Kings College London\, Department of War Studies\, as our speaker for this event in which we study the great Revolutionary War naval battle of the Glorious First of June. Andrew is one of the nation’s most prominent naval historians who has written extensively on the naval and strategic history of the British Empire between the Napoleonic Wars and the First World War. His many publications covering conflict in the age of sail include War at Sea in the Age of Sail\, Weidenfeld & Nicolson (2000) and Nelson: Britannia’s God of War\, Faber and Faber (2004). He received the 2014 Anderson Medal for The Challenge: Britain against America in the Naval War of 1812 as well as the prestigious Gilder Lehrman Book Prize in Military History in 2014 and Hattendorf Prize for Distinguished Original Research in Maritime History in 2024.Andrew is a Fellow of the Royal Historical Society and also Director of the Laughton Naval Unit. DESCRIPTION:The NHSA is delighted to welcome Charles Singleton once again as our speaker for this event in which we study one of the decisive conflicts of the English Civil War: the great battle for the North of England at Marston Moor. Charles was the editor of the Oxford Companion to Military History and is the author of several books on early modern warfare and the Civil War period specifically\, including Famous by my Sword: The Army of Montrose and the Military Revolution and Uncharitable Mischief: Barbarity and excess in the British Civil Wars. He is the creative director for the Early Modern Portfolio for the military history publishers Helion & Co. and created the “Century of the Soldier 1618-1721” and the “From Retinue to Regiment 1453-1618” series for them. DESCRIPTION:This is a reprise of the event of 15 and 16 June but on this occasion we are delighted to have Professor Charles Esdaile as our speaker. Professor of History at Liverpool University\, Charles has been prolific in his publications on the Napoleonic Wars. His many works on the period include “Fighting Napoleon” (2004) and “Napoleon’s Wars” (2007) and\, with reference to the 100 Days Campaign\, “Napoleon\, France and Waterloo” (2016). His “Walking Waterloo”  (2019) is one of the most remarkably detailed guides on the battlefield. He also has a strong interest in the simulation of historical battles and has recently published a new work “Wargaming Waterloo”. SUMMARY:The Battle of Waterloo
DESCRIPTION:The NHSA is delighted and honoured to welcome Major General (Retired) James Cowan CBE DSO as our speaker for this event in which we study what is probably the most well-known battle of the Napoleonic Wars. James has had a long and very distinguished military career that included command of the 1st Battalion\, The Black Watch\, 11th Brigade in Afghanistan and 3rd Division  as well as the position of Head of Counter Terrorism in the Ministry of Defence. Since leaving the army James has been Chief Executive of the HALO Trust and a founding trustee of Waterloo Uncovered\, the most significant archaeological project ever conducted at the battlefield\, which involves both veterans and serving personnel. James has also embarked on a giant recreation of the battle in a diorama form\, taking inspiration from Siborne’s famous model\, which has been exhibited at the National Army Museum. DESCRIPTION:The NHSA is delighted to welcome Ian Knight as our speaker for an event in which we study the battle of Ulundi\, the final major engagement in the Anglo-Zulu War of 1879. Ian is internationally regarded as the current leading authority on the nineteenth-century history of the Zulu kingdom\, and in particular the Anglo-Zulu War. \nHe has been researching and writing on the subject for more than thirty years\, publishing such acclaimed works as “Zulu Rising: The Epic Story of Isandlwana and Rorke’s Drift” and “Brave Men’s Blood: The Epic of the Zulu War”. His The National Army Museum Book of the Zulu War was joint winner of the Royal United Services’ Institute Award for ‘Best Military History Book’. SUMMARY:Saratoga: Turning Point of the American Revolution
DESCRIPTION:The NHSA is honoured to welcome Eric Schnitzer as our speaker for this event\, in which we study the battles of Freeman’s Farm and Bemis Heights that proved decisive in the Saratoga campaign of the American Revolutionary War in 1777. Eric has been a ranger and historian at Saratoga National Historical Park for more than 20 years. Among other publications on the Revolutionary War and the Northern Campaign in particular\, he has co-authored\, with the artist\, Don Troiani\, Liberty and most recently the richly illustrated\, Campaign to Saratoga –1777.  As one curator has said\, Eric is “the authority on the campaign of 1777″ whose extensive and detailed research has contributed to a “nuanced understanding of [the] historical events and actors with sympathy\, understanding and accuracy”.   The talk will take place at the NHSA on Sunday 5 May 2024 at 1.30 pm and will be accompanied by an exhibition and tabletop simulation of the battles. DESCRIPTION:The NHSA are very honoured to welcome Professor Raymond Callahan as our speaker for this event in which we study the key battle of Kohima in the Burma theatre in 1944. Ray Callahan is a pre-eminent contemporary authority on Field Marshal Slim and the Burma campaign. His many acclaimed works include “Triumph at Imphal-Kohima: How the Indian Army Finally Stopped the Japanese Juggernaut”\, named as one of the most outstanding books on World War 2 history in 2017. He is also the winner of the Templer Prize in 2022 for his “The 1945 Burma Campaign and the Transformation of the British Indian Army”. Ray is a former Professor at the University of Delaware and director of the Master of Arts and Liberal Studies Program. He held the John F. Morrison Chair of Military History at the US Army’s Command and General Staff College and is a Fellow of the Royal Historical Society. SUMMARY:The Relief of Orleans 1429
DESCRIPTION:The NHSA is honoured to welcome the leading medieval military historian\, Dr. Matthew Bennett FRSA\, as our speaker for this event in which we study one of the most famous victories of French forces in the Hundred Years War: the Relief of Orleans in 1429 by Joan of Arc. In his talk\, Matthew will explore the ethos and practice of warfare in the Middle Ages\, especially how Chivalry is (mis)understood. He will also be discussing siege tactics and missile weaponry: bows\, crossbows and artillery and the effectiveness of armour against them. His many publications include: ‘Manuals of Warfare and Chivalry’\, in Companion to Chivalry; “Agincourt 1415: Triumph against the Odds” and “Fighting Techniques of the Medieval World”. Matthew will address Joan of Arc’s impact at a decisive point of the Hundred Years War and the cultural significance of religion in her era\, both of which need to be further investigated and explained to modern audiences. DESCRIPTION:Our next talk\, on the battles of the Crimean War\, will be at 9.15 a.m. on Saturday 9 December. \nMartin Sheppard is a historian who has written three books on the war. His General Sir James Scarlett: The Life and Letters of the Commander of the Heavy Brigade at Balaklava is a radical reinterpretation of that battle\, the scene of the two most famous cavalry charges in British military history\, those of the Heavy Brigade and the Light Brigade. In this book\, Martin used Scarlett’s previously unpublished letters to throw fresh light on what happened during the campaign and at the battle itself. DESCRIPTION:As part of our sequence of talks on Napoleon’s Invasion of Russia in 1812\, the NHSA are extremely pleased to welcome Dr Stephen Summerfield as our first speaker. Stephen has written extensively on the Napoleonic period with lavishly illustrated works on the artillery\, flags\, organisation\, tactics\, and uniforms of the Austrian\, British\, French\, Prussian\, Russian\, Spanish and Westphalian Armies among many of the other protagonists. He has covered aspects of the 1812 campaign in detail with co-author\, Paul Richardson\, in (2024) Russia 1812\, The Death of Napoleon’s Grande Armée and (2021) Vilnius 1812: Ghosts of Napoleon’s Grande Armée through their Artifacts.  He is an acknowledged expert on artillery of the period with consultancies with the Channel 5\, Fort Amherst\, Royal Armouries and the Shorncliffe Trust among others. He is the editor of the Smoothbore Ordnance Journal that deals with the technical aspects of 18th and 19th warfare. He is a retired Regular and Army Reserves Officer and an accredited member of the International Guild of Battlefield Guides and the Guild’s Chief Validator He is a former Council Member of the Army Records Society and is deeply interested in the actions of the British Battalion of the International Brigades during this conflict. He has been leading tours to Spanish Civil War battlefields since 2007. Colonel Wilkinson’s talk will focus on the last gasp gamble of the ill fated Republican Government of Spain against the Nationalist Forces\, in a war described by many as the opening round of World War 2.
