SUMMARY:Stalingrad 1942: The Battle for the Mamayev Kurgan
DESCRIPTION:The NHSA is delighted to welcome back Dr Michael Jones as our speaker for this event in which we focus on the bitter conflict in 1942 for the Mamayev Kurgan\, the strategic height overlooking the city of Stalingrad. Michael is a fellow of the Royal Historical Society and a member of the British Commission for Military History. He has taught at the University of South West England\, Glasgow University\, and Winchester College. As a leading expert on Stalingrad and the Eastern Front more generally his critically acclaimed works include “Stalingrad: How the Red Army Triumphed”\, “Total War: From Stalingrad to Berlin”\, “Leningrad: State of Siege”\, “The Retreat: Hitler’s First Defeat” and most recently “After Hitler: The Last Days of the Second World War in Europe”.. He has also conducted battlefield tours of the Eastern Front for several years. The talk will take place at 1.30 pm on Saturday  6 December and will be accompanied by an exhibition and a simulation of the assault on this strategic high point  overlooking the Volga. SUMMARY:The Battle of Cape St Vincent
DESCRIPTION:The NHSA is delighted to welcome Professor David Manley as our speaker for this event in which we study the Revolutionary Wars battle of Cape St Vincent\, in which the young Commodore Horatio Nelson had a leading role. David is MOD Professor of Naval Architecture at University College London. He has worked  for over 30 years in naval safety and survivability\, leading the development of the UK’s maritime survivability strategy\, combat safety and naval mission modularity. He is a Fellow of the Royal Institution of Naval Architects and a Constructor Captain in the Royal Corps of Naval Constructors. He is a keen naval historian and in the midst of his other work he has found time also to be the author of many naval historical wargames rules including “Far Distant Ships”  (for the age of sail) and  “White Bear Red Sun” (for the pre-dreadnought period). The talk will take place at 1.30 pm on Saturday 10 January 2026 and be accompanied by an exhibtion and simulation of the battle in miniature. DESCRIPTION:The NHSA is delighted and honoured to welcome Dr. Stéphane Thion as our speaker for this event\, in which we study the epic struggle during the Thirty Years’ War between France and Spain at Rocroi in 1643. Stéphane has had a passionate interest in military history for over 15 years. He has published extensively on the Thirty Years War including the recent\, beautifully illustrated\, “The French Armies of the Thirty Years War 1618-1648″ and “The battle of Fribourg 1644: Enghien and Turenne At War” as well as “Les Armées Françaises de la guerre de Trente ans”\,  and “Rocroi 1643: The Victory of Youth”. He is also a regular contributor to periodicals covering the period. The event will take place on 21 February 2026 at 9.30 am. SUMMARY:The Battle of Hohenlinden 1800
DESCRIPTION:NHSA has the privilege of welcoming back Col. John H. Gill (Jack) as our speaker for our study of the Battle of Hohenlinden\, the decisive conflict bringing an end to the wars of the Second Coalition against Revolutionary France. Jack is an associate fellow at the International Institute for Strategic Studies in London and an adjunct professor at the Near East­–South Asia Center for Strategic Studies\, affiliated with the National Defense University in Washington DC. Specializing in the military history of the Napoleonic period\, his publications include Thunder on the Danube\, With Eagles to Glory\,  A Soldier for Napoleon (editor) and  The Battle of Znaim: Napoleon\, the Habsburgs and End of the War of 1809 as well as chapters\, articles and papers presented to the Society for Military History\, the Consortium on the Revolutionary Era and the German Studies Association. His most recent work is Broken Eagles: Napoleon’s German Allies and the Campaigns of 1813. Based on years of research in German and French archives as well as battlefield visits\, it is a comprehensive study of the German allies of Napoleon in 1813 featuring more than 100 detailed maps\, orders of battle charts and schematics as well as previously unpublished illustrations in color and black and white. A former U.S. Army South Asia Foreign Area Officer\, his other publications focus on security affairs in southern Asia\, most recently\, co-authoring the IISS monograph Nuclear Deterrence and Stability in South Asia: Perceptions and Realities (2021).
